How to tie the Uni knot
Ties line to terminal tackle, and doubles as the building block for joining two lines.
Also called: Duncan loop, Grinner knot
Why this knot
One knot that works on everything, and you can leave it as a loop for more lure action or slide it tight to the eye.
Tie it
Step 1 of 5
- 1 Pass the tag end through the hook eye and fold it back alongside the standing line.
- 2 Form a small loop by laying the tag back over both strands.
- 3 Wrap the tag end through that loop and around both strands five or six times.
- 4 Wet the line and pull the tag to close the wraps into a barrel.
- 5 Slide the barrel down to the eye by pulling the standing line, or stop short to leave a loop.
That's the knot. Wet it, seat it, and pull against it before you cast.
Getting it right
- Stopping short leaves a loop knot, which lets a jig or swimbait swing more freely.
- Six wraps for braid, five for mono and fluoro.
- Learn this one properly and the double uni for joining lines comes almost free.
What goes wrong
- Pulling the standing line before the barrel is closed. The wraps tangle instead of stacking.
