How to tie the Arbor knot

Ties the line to the spool when you are respooling.

easy MonoFluoroBraid Line to reel

Also called: Reel knot

Why this knot

You will tie this once a season and never think about it, until a fish takes all your line and it matters.

Tie it

  1. 1 Pass the line around the spool arbor and bring the tag back out.
  2. 2 Tie a simple overhand knot around the standing line.
  3. 3 Tie a second overhand knot in the tag end itself, about half an inch further along. This one acts as a stopper.
  4. 4 Wet both, then pull the standing line so the first knot slides down and jams against the stopper.
  5. 5 Trim the tag and start winding under tension.

Getting it right

  • With braid, put a strip of tape on the bare spool first, or lay down a short mono backing. Braid alone slips on the arbor no matter how good the knot is.
  • Wind under steady tension. Loose line on the spool causes wind knots later.

What goes wrong

  • Braid tied straight onto a slick spool with no tape or backing. The whole spool of line spins.
