How to tie the Dropper loop

Creates a loop standing out from the middle of the line, for a second hook or a bait rig.

medium MonoFluoro Loop knots

Also called: Dropper

Why this knot

The loop sits perpendicular to the line, so the dropper hangs clear instead of collapsing against it.

Tie it

  1. 1 Form a loop in the line where you want the dropper.
  2. 2 Wrap one side of the loop around the standing line five or six times, working outward.
  3. 3 Find the small opening at the centre of those wraps and hold it open with a finger.
  4. 4 Push the top of the original loop down through that centre opening.
  5. 5 Wet it and pull both standing lines apart steadily. The wraps roll up and the loop stands out.

Getting it right

  • Hold the centre opening while you pull, or the loop pulls back through.
  • Keep the loop short, a couple of inches, or it tangles around the main line.
  • Even wraps on both sides make the loop stand out square.

What goes wrong

  • Letting go of the centre opening before the knot begins to seat.
