What this site is

howsthebite is an informational site about US recreational fishing: daily water and weather conditions, state fishing license information, and state fishing size and bag limits, built from public agency data and rebuilt daily. It's free to use, requires no account, and isn't a booking platform, a licensing authority, or a law firm.

Not official, not legal advice

Fishing regulations shown here are informational only. Size limits, bag limits, season dates and license requirements are drawn from published state agency regulations, checked carefully, and dated — but the agency's own current publication always controls, and it can be stricter, or have changed, since the date shown on the page you're reading. Before you fish, confirm the current rule with the relevant state wildlife agency. Nothing on this site is legal advice, and using it does not create any professional relationship between you and Honeygoat GmbH.

Water conditions, the bite index, and solunar windows are built from public weather and stream-gauge data and an experience-based scoring model. They describe conditions; they do not predict whether you will catch fish, and they are not a substitute for checking conditions yourself before you go out on the water.

No warranty

This site and its content are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including — to the extent permitted by law — warranties of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't guarantee the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that every figure on it is currently correct, even though we work to keep it that way.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Honeygoat GmbH and the people who build this site are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, revenue, or opportunity, arising from your access to, use of, or inability to use howsthebite, or from any decision made based on information on this site — including a decision about whether, where, or how to fish. This applies whether the claim is based on warranty, contract, tort, or any other legal theory, and even if we were advised of the possibility of such damages.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

This site links to state agency pages, affiliate partners, and other third-party websites. We don't control those sites, don't review their content on an ongoing basis, and aren't responsible for what's on them or what happens if you use them. Visiting a linked site is at your own risk and subject to that site's own terms.

Intellectual property

The site's design, code, text, and original graphics belong to Honeygoat GmbH or the specifically credited rights holder and may not be reproduced, redistributed, or used to build a competing product without prior written consent. This does not apply to the underlying public-domain government data itself (agency regulation text, USGS gauge readings, NOAA weather data) — see the legal notice for detail on those sources — only to our presentation, calculations, and original writing built on top of them.

Acceptable use

Don't scrape or bulk-download this site in a way that degrades it for other visitors, don't attempt to bypass any access controls, and don't use the site to break the law — including the fishing regulations it describes. We may restrict access for anyone who does.

Changes to the site or these terms

We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the site at any time. We may update these terms as the site changes; the date below tells you when that last happened. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept the current version.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, reflecting where Honeygoat GmbH is established (Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland). This does not deprive you of any consumer-protection rights you have under the mandatory law of the country where you live.
