The five-fish bag covers all black bass together — largemouth, smallmouth, Alabama, Guadalupe and spotted. Only largemouth and smallmouth carry the 14-inch minimum. Well over a hundred individual waters carry their own rules, so check the water you are fishing.

A protective slot, which works the opposite way round to the red drum slot: bass between 16 and 24 inches must go back. You may keep fish at or under 16 inches, or at or over 24 inches, and only one of those big ones per day.
