Ohio charges no separate trout stamp or Lake Erie permit — the base license covers all Ohio public water, Lake Erie and the Ohio River included. A plastic Ohio Conservation Card costs $4, and a duplicate license $4, though reprints are free online.
How long it lasts
Annual licenses run 365 days from the day you buy them, not to a fixed calendar date. The separate regulations booklet still follows a March-to-February season for limits and seasons.
Who doesn't need one
- Anyone under 16 — this covers frogs and turtles too
- Fishing a privately owned pond, lake or reservoir that fish do not migrate to or from
- Helping someone who holds the free mobility-impaired or blind fishing license, as long as the two of you use only one line between you
- Fishing on land and water you or your parents own, unless it is in or borders a state park or state-owned lake
- Tenants living on land they farm for most of their income, fishing that land, except state-owned lakes
- Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty, while on leave or furlough
- Everyone, on Ohio's free fishing days
ODNR words the age rule this way: ODNR: "A fishing license is required to take fish from Ohio waters... Persons under 16 years of age are not required to purchase a fishing license." There is no upper age exemption; residents get reduced senior pricing instead, though ODNR does not state the qualifying age on that page.
