New Mexico fishing license

Do I need one?

Yes — anyone 12 or older needs one, until you turn 70 as a resident.

A year costs $35 if you live here and $90 if you don't. Just passing through? One-day fishing costs $12. Fishing Forest Service or BLM water adds the compulsory 10-dollar habitat stamp, plus the 4-dollar access validation for anglers 18 and over.

There is a free option: Annual fishing, 70 and older. Free, and it needs neither habitat stamp nor validations. Residents only.

If you're visiting

licensePrice
Annual fishing $90
Junior annual fishing (12 to 17) $20
One-day fishing $12
Five-day fishing $30
Habitat stampSame price as for residents. $10
Habitat management and access validation $4
Second rod validation $10

Two add-ons matter here: the 10-dollar habitat stamp is compulsory on Forest Service and BLM land, which covers most New Mexico fishing water, and the 4-dollar habitat management and access validation comes on top of it — it does not replace it. A per-transaction vendor fee applies to every purchase.

How long it lasts

NMDOW: "Licenses are valid April 1 through March 31 of the following year." A licence bought in February is worth weeks, not months.

Who doesn't need one

NMDOW words the age rule this way: NMDOW: "While fishing in New Mexico, anglers 12 years and older must possess a valid New Mexico Fishing License or Game-Hunting and Fishing License." Residents of 70 and over hold a free licence that needs no stamp or validation.

Where to buy it

Wondering about the big retailers? A shop like Walmart sells the state's license at the state's price — it sets none of its own.

Days you can fish without one

all
New Mexico holds free fishing days each year on which no licence is needed. The 2026-27 rules booklet read for this entry names no dates in the fee section, so none are claimed here.

NMDOW publishes this as a recurring rule rather than a fixed date. Check the exact days on their free fishing page before you plan around it.
