Can you keep a cobia in New York?

We can't tell you — and neither can the agency, cleanly

Statewide

Status unclear

A 2023 DEC summary states a flat 2-fish daily limit. The codified 6 NYCRR §40.1 table states a per-vessel structure instead — 1 fish per angler fishing from shore, but only 1 fish per vessel (not per angler) fishing from a boat. Both agree on a 37-inch minimum and a year-round season, but the bag rule itself is structured differently, not just a different number.

Check NYSDEC directly →

The minimum length (37 inches) and season (all year) are settled, but the bag is not stated here because our two reachable sources disagree on the rule itself: a flat 2 a day, or 1 per vessel when fishing from a boat. Check dec.ny.gov directly before keeping a cobia.
