Free fishing days in Iowa

Iowa's free fishing weekend covers residents. Visitors need a license as usual, and the trout fee stays payable for everyone. Nothing else changes: limits, sizes, seasons and closed waters all still apply.

The Iowa DNR holds one free fishing weekend a year, in early June: "Iowa residents can try fishing without buying a license ... All other regulations remain in place." It covers residents only, and the trout fee and other permits are untouched. The DNR announces the dates each spring.

What a free day does not cover
- Bag limits, size limits and closed seasons are unchanged.
- Waters that are closed stay closed.
- Separate permits can still be required — Iowa charges for trout fee, resident, trout fee, nonresident, lifetime trout fee, age 65 and over, bonus line, third fishing line. Check before you rely on a free day.
- A free day waives the license, not the rules the license comes with.
